Mission Statement
Probation is a court ordered disposition that places an offender under the supervision of a probation officer in lieu of incarceration. Probation’s goals are to protect the residents of Saratoga County by supervision of offender’s, thorough risk and needs assessment and maintaining court ordered standards of lawful conduct. Probation is based upon the principal that unlawful conduct will change for the better with skilled counseling, referral for special needs and learning personal accountability for one’s conduct.
The goals of our supervision are to teach the following life skills.
- Responsibility for inappropriate behavior
- Accountability
- Self-discipline
- Mantain family contacts
- Promote family values
- Cultivation of a positive attitude
- Respect for other in the home and community
The goals of our investigation reports.
- Provide accurate legal and social information to Courts
- Provide sentencing alternatives to Judges
- Determine risk/need level of offenders in community or incarceration
- Provide departments of Parole and Correctional Services with information used for inmate classification in prison
- Provide the military with information prior to service entry
- Probation reports become a permanent record for future reference should a new arrest occur

Programs and Services
The Adult Services Unit
The Adult Services Unit completes probation reports for the Courts in Saratoga County which aid the Courts in determining the appropriate dispositions for offenders. In addition, the Probation Department provides supervision of the adult offenders who are placed on probation.
Juvenile Services Unit
The Juvenile Services Unit provides three major services:

Intake, where juveniles are diverted from the Family Court and handled through the Probation Department.

The completion of Pre-Dispositional Investigations of juveniles referred to Family Court

The supervision of juveniles sentenced to probation, Adjournment in Contemplation of Dismissal (ACOD), or Conditional Discharge.
Community safety is the primary consideration in dealing with juveniles and rehabilitation of the juvenile is secondary.
