April is National Donate Life Month. This month-long observance aims at increasing the number of registered organ, eye, and tissue donors, as well as lifesaving and life-improving transplants. One organ donor can save eight lives and heal 75 more through eye and tissue donation. You can sign up to be an organ donor at your next Saratoga County DMV appointment. Every 10 minutes another name is added to the national registry. Every 15 hours someone dies waiting for an organ transplant in New York State. By becoming an organ donor you have the ability to save up to 8 lives, as well as enhance the lives of an additional people through the restoration of eyesight, fighting infections, preventing loss of mobility, and helping burn victims. How do I become an organ donor?

Becoming an organ donor is easy. Simply complete the donation section on your driver license or non-driver ID application or renewal form. You can also enroll online at www.DonateLife.ny.gov.

Is there any age restriction on joining the registry?

Effective February 14, 2017, those who are 16 and 17 years old may now enroll in the Registry and give their consent to donate organs upon death. However, parents and guardians of 16 and 17 year olds still hold the final decision and may revoke the consent of minors to donate their organs if they die before reaching 18 years of age.

What does becoming an organ donor mean?

By enlisting as an organ donor you are giving legal consent for the recovery of your organs, tissues and eyes for the purposes of transplantation and research at the time of your death.
