REAL ID rush resulting in longer DMV wait times
Saratoga County Clerk: Consider ID needs prior to visiting the DMV
DMV continues to provide REAL ID now required for domestic flights
As of May 7, 2025, a form of REAL ID is required to board a domestic flight (within the U.S.) or enter certain federal buildings.
A REAL ID is a federally compliant DMV-issued driver’s license, learner permit, or non-driver ID. A U.S. passport also is a form of REAL ID and is good for domestic and international flights. Other forms of REAL ID that will be accepted to board a plane can be found on the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) website at www.TSA.gov/id.
Saratoga County residents who do not have a REAL ID-compliant document can visit a DMV location to upgrade their driver’s license or non-driver ID to a REAL ID if they plan to travel or may need one to enter federal facilities.
New York residents are not required to upgrade to a REAL ID. The state-issued Standard Driver’s License and Standard Non-driver ID remain valid ID in New York State.
There is no additional cost beyond the renewal fee to get a REAL ID.
Residents may choose to get an Enhanced ID, which also meets federal REAL ID standards. An Enhanced ID costs $30 extra and can be used as identification when returning to the United States by land or sea from Canada, Mexico and some countries in the Caribbean. Visit Enhanced or REAL ID to help you decide which might be right for you.
Unsure if you have a REAL ID or Enhanced ID? If your New York State license or ID does not have a star or a flag on it, then you do not have a REAL ID-compliant document.
To assist residents, the New York State DMV has implemented several online tools such as a document guide and an online application pre-screening process.
