Federal REAL ID deadline set for May 7, 2025

Saratoga County residents who have not already done so should plan to upgrade their driver’s license or non-driver ID to a REAL ID before the federal REAL ID deadline of May 7, 2025, if they plan to travel or may need one to enter federal facilities.
A REAL ID is a federally compliant DMV-issued driver’s license, learner permit, or non-driver ID that will be required to board a domestic flight (within the U.S.) or enter certain federal buildings starting in May 2025, unless you have a valid passport. (A passport is also acceptable as a REAL ID-compliant document.)

Saratoga County residents who determine that they need a REAL ID should plan to visit a DMV office as soon as possible to get a REAL ID even if their license, permit, or non-driver ID is not yet due for renewal. There is no additional cost beyond the renewal fee to get a REAL ID.

Residents also may choose to get an Enhanced ID, which meets federal REAL ID standards. An Enhanced ID costs $30 extra and can be used as identification when returning to the United States by land or sea from Canada, Mexico and some countries in the Caribbean. Unsure if you have a REAL ID or Enhanced ID? If your New York State license or ID does not have a star or a flag on it, then you do not have a REAL ID-compliant document.
