Saratoga National Historical Park

Saratoga County Board of Supervisors Ask Congress, National Park Service to Rename the Saratoga National Historical Park to the Saratoga National Battlefield Park

June 19, 2024

BALLSTON SPA, NY – The Saratoga County Board of Supervisors at its June 18, 2024, meeting passed a resolution requesting Congress and the National Park Service to rename the Saratoga National Historical Park to the Saratoga National Battlefield Park.

The Saratoga National Historic Park commemorates the Battles of Saratoga, which were pivotal in securing American independence during the Revolutionary War. The park was originally named Saratoga Battlefield Park when it was designated a historical site in the Towns of Saratoga and Stillwater. The name remained the same when it was designated a New York State historical site in 1927. When it became a national park in 1938, the word battlefield was dropped from its name.

Saratoga County Board of Supervisors Chairman Phil Barrett (Clifton Park) said, “Saratoga County is home of hallowed ground marking the Turning Point of the American Revolution and we are thankful to the National Park Service for their longstanding relationship with Saratoga County. We request the National Historical Park return to its original name, which distinguishes the park as a historical battlefield and provides a unique identifier to clearly inform tourists of the significance of the park to American independence.”

The request is being made as Saratoga County commemorates the upcoming 250th anniversary of the Battles of Saratoga. Saratoga: America’s Turning Point is the county’s multi-year initiative to celebrate the Turning Point of the American Revolution through promotion of heritage tourism, preservation of historical sites, and education of the historical significance of these battles had in our country’s founding. The 250th anniversary of the Battles of Saratoga is in 2027.

Saratoga County Resolution 167 of 2024 states the change would more accurately reflect the historical significance of the site, emphasize the crucial military engagements that took place, and enhance the public understanding and appreciation of its historical importance.
The resolution was passed unanimously, and a copy will be sent to the Secretary of the Interior, the Director of the National Park Service, and the members of the United States Congress representing the County of Saratoga.

Saratoga County Animal Shelter

Saratoga County Animal Shelter: Practice Heat Safety for Pets During Heatwave

Reminds Pet Owners to Take Heat Precautions if Attending Rabies Clinic Tuesday

June 17, 2024

BALLSTON SPA, NY – The Saratoga County Animal Shelter is reminding pet owners to practice heat safety during extreme weather and urges those who will attend its free rabies vaccination clinic on Tuesday, June 18, to take precautions and to arrive during designated times only so pets are not outside longer than necessary.

Heat Safety for Pets:
• Pets can get dehydrated quickly. Any time your pet is outside, make sure they have a shaded area for protection from heat and sun, and plenty of fresh, cold water.
• Don’t take pets for walks during the hottest parts of the day. Limit exercise on hot days and stay off pavement – it can quickly burn your dog’s paw pads.
• Know the symptoms of overheating: extreme panting or difficulty breathing, increased heart rate, excessive drooling, glazed eyes, deep red or purple tongue, dizziness or lack of coordination, vomiting.
• Never leave your pet in a hot car, even with the windows down or for only a few minutes.
• If you have a pet suffering from heatstroke, move them into the shade or an air-conditioned area. Then, apply cold towels or ice packs to their head, neck, and chest. Otherwise, run cool (not ice-cold) water over them. Also, let them consume minor amounts of cool water or lick ice cubes. Call your veterinarian.
